About Us

Having made a small beginning under the patronage of Rotary Club of Gauhati the Rotary Club of Gauhati South came into being in the year 1977. Incidentally , Rotary Club of Gauhati was the first Rotary Club in Assam(December 1955). It was an untiring endeavour of Late Rtn Sunil Kumar Bhattacharyya and a handful of enthusiastic individuals , namely , Rtns Bijoy Goenka,Ram Gopal Harlalka, Deva Kanta Kakati, Bhavani Kumar Bhuyan, Murari Sikaria, B.N.Dasgupta and Dr. N.K. Agarwala. Incidentally Late Rtn Sunil Kumar Bhattacharyya at that time was a prominent member and a Past President of Rotary Club of Shillong(Chartered in May 1957).

Patronage of Rotary Club of Gauhati was an initiative of Rtn Ramesh Chandra Choudhury , District Governor of RID 329(1976 -1977) and Past President Rtn Om Prakash Anand. At that time Rotary District 329 covered the entire Eastern India. Later with the growth of more Clubs , RID 340 was carved out of the large Dist 329. The same Rotary District is now known as RID 3240.

Rotary Club of Gauhati South received its charter on the 6th April 1978 from the then Dist. Governor Rtn P.K.Sinha (RID 329) and Rtn Sunil Kumar Bhattacharyya was the Charter President.

This newly formed club initially used to meet in the small conference room of of the Assam Secretariat.

Right from the beginning members and Annes of Rotary Club of Gauhati South were actively focused on the community service. The club can take pride in launching the Anti Polio Campaign during the year 1977 , years before Rotary International took it up as a serious world wide movement during the year 1985, for making the world free from Polio. It has never looked back since.

“It made me look like I all of a sudden stumbled upon my heritage. It’s not like that. You don’t stumble upon your heritage. It’s there, just waiting to be explored and shared. But what you need is a sign that somebody wants to share this with you.” – Robbie Robertson

“The tragedy is that rhino horn is made of keratin, the same stuff that makes up human hair and nails. It has no medicinal value, you might as well eat your fingernails.” – Mark Jones, Executive Director, Humane Society International/UK,It is devastating to see rhinos killed for a cure that doesn’t work.
